Points of interest in BALMASEDA:

  • City Hall:

This austere Baroque palace was built in 1745 to replace the previous one, located in the Plazuela del Marqués de Legarda. In 1920, the ground floor of the Casa Consistorial was reformed, extending the first two arcades along the entire ground floor and creating an impressive Mudejar-inspired portico. This popular space is known as ‘Casa de la Villa’.

  • Church of San Severino: Dating from the 14th century, it has three vaulted naves supported by six slender columns. Legend has it that its three medieval tombs belong to Enrique de Lucerga, a knight who fought in the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212), the founder of Balmaseda, Lope Sáenz de Mena and his wife. Also of note are its medieval stained glass windows and its Cavaille-Coll organ from the end of the 19th century.

  • Old Bridge: Dating from the 12th century. Three Romanesque arches, the central one significantly larger, topped by a Gothic tower. Historic entrance of Castile to Bizkaia, gateway to the walled enclosure of the town. It is, without a doubt, the town’s emblematic monument.
